Tips for preparing for 4th grade:

· Practice your math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

· Read, read, read!!!

· Looking for something to do over the summer? Write a story about something fun you did, or write a friend a letter. This is an excellent way to practice those writing skills.

· Keeping a journal is another great activity to do over the summer.

4th Grade Supply List

· Crayons (box no larger than 24)

· Non-permanent magic markers (set of 8 colors)

· Scissors (sharp)

· 2 glue sticks

· Red ink pens

· #2 pencils (steady supply throughout year)

· Pencil box and sharpener

· Loose leaf notebook paper – wide rule (steady supply throughout year)

· 4 folders with pockets (sturdy – without brads)

· Two one inch 3-ring binders (for science, social studies)

· 2 erasable ink pens (black or blue)

· 1 large box of tissues

· Yellow highlighter

· 1 black and white composition book (for journal)

· Colored pencils

· 1 pump bottle of hand sanitizer

Reading

In 4th grades students will discover many different genres and practice comprehension strategies aimed at improving their reading ability. In 4th grade we also hope to foster a love of reading and create lifelong readers.

Language Arts

In Language Arts we will be enhancing our vocabulary, improving our spelling, learning about the different components of writing, completing various writing projects, and practicing proper grammar.

Math

In 4th grade we continue to build on prior skills and knowledge. Children are expected to know all basic math facts in all four fundamental operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They will expand on knowledge of fractions, decimals, and geometric concepts. Word problems are increasingly prevalent in the 4th grade curriculum.

Science

Science units covered in 4th grade include; weather, earth patterns, force & motion, electricity, plant & animal adaptations, ecosystems, and Virginia Natural Resources. Students will continue to expand on previous knowledge.

Social Studies

In 4th grade our social studies focus is Virginia History. We study from 1580s (Native Americans) to the Civil War. In addition, we study the geography of our state, its neighbors, its regions, its resources, and its industries.

SOL Information

4th grade is an SOL testing year for reading and math. The 4th grade SOL tests will take place in May.
