For the last
twenty years, the Director
of the Islander Band Program has been Mr.
Douglas J. Spruill. Mr. Spruill Received
his BA in Music in 1984 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University. He
is also a 1978 graduate of Denbigh High School in Newport
News Va. He is an active member of the Music Educators
National Conference, Virginia Music Educators Association
(Past District Chair) and Virginia Band and Orchestra
Directors Association (Past Instrumental Rep).
Ryan Welborn joined the staff of the Poquoson
High School Band in 2003 where he assists with both the
marching and concert percussion programs. During marching
season he is primarily responsible for arranging for
and instructing the front ensemble, and during concert
season he assists the Percussion Ensemble with concert
literature and skill development. Ryan attended Lee-Davis
HS in Mechanicsville, VA from 1994-98 where he was section
leader and participated in numerous regional ensembles.
From 1998-2002 he attended the University of Virginia
in Charlottesville where he performed with the Wind Ensemble
and the Charlottesville Symphony. During the summers
he instructed marching percussion sections at Lee-Davis
HS (98,99), Deep Creek HS (00,01,04) and Atlee HS (02).
In addition to his work with the Poquoson Band, Ryan
is also principal percussionist in the Chesapeake Bay
Wind Ensemble and teaches Social Studies at Poquoson
High School.
Jeff Garnand is a 1982 graduate of the
University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor of
Music in Music Education. His major instrument is trumpet. Mr.
Garnand joined the Islander Band staff in 2004
as high brass instructor.
Elizabeth French is a 2000 graduate of
Poquoson High School and was a private flute student
of Mrs. Caroline Cale. Ms French is a 2004 graduate
of Elon University with a BS in Music Education. While
at Elon she studied flute with Linda Cykert. Ms
French joined the Islander Band staff in 2004.
