Athletic Eligibility


Virginia High School League (VHSL)

VHSL Athletic Participation Form

·        Must have all four pages filled out completely with signatures

·        Must be turned into coach or on file with the Activities Director prior to trying out for a sport or using the weight room

·        Must be current for each school year, dated after May 1 of the previous year 

VHSL Individual Eligibility Regulations (VHSL Handbook section 28)

To be eligible to represent the school in any VHSL sponsored interscholastic contest a student shall meet the following requirements:

1)        28-4-1 SCHOLARSHIP RULE- The student shall:

·        For the first semester, be  currently enrolled in not fewer than five subjects, or their equivalent, (New Horizons and Marketing may be 2 or 3 credits) offered for credit and which may be used for graduation the immediately preceding year or the immediately preceding semester for schools that certify credit on a semester basis; and

·        For the second semester, be currently enrolled in not fewer than five subjects, or their equivalent, offered for credit and which may be used for graduation the immediately preceding semester.

·        Note: Credit for the State Department of Education must recognize courses. 

2)      28-6-1  TRANSFER RULE- the student shall not have enrolled in one high school and subsequently transferred to and enrolled in another high school without a corresponding change in the residence of his/her parents, parent, or guardian. 

3)      28-5-1  AGE RULE- The student shall not have reached the age of 19 on or before the first day of August of the school year in which he/she wishes to compete. 

4)      28-1-1 BONA FIDE STUDENT RULE- The student shall be a regular bona fide student in good standing of the school, which he/she represents. 

5)      28-1-3(2) Any student who is under penalty of suspension, or whose character or conduct is such as to reflect discredit upon his/her school, is not considered in good standing. 

6)      28-2-1  GRADE RULE- The student shall be enrolled in the last four years of high school.

·        Eighth grade students who passed five 8th grade subjects the past school year, reached the age of fifteen on or before the first day of August may compete on the varsity level.

7)      28-3-1  ENROLLMENT RULE-  the student shall have been regularly enrolled in  the  school , which he/she represents no later than the fifteenth school day of the semester. 

8)      ATHLETIC INSURANCE- All athletes must have medical insurance.   Athletes’ that do not have insurance may obtain coverage by purchasing school insurance.  This insurance company has a 24 hour coverage that will cover all activities except football.  Those playing football will have to take out a special policy with this company.  Forms for this insurance may be picked up in the main office or from the Activities Director.  Insurance forms should be returned to the Activities Director before the athlete may participate. 

9)      VHSL CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT PROGRAM- All enrolled students of the school who participate in interscholastic sports and activities under the jurisdiction of the VHSL are eligible for coverage.  If, as the result of a covered injury, an insured person suffers paralysis, coma, or brain death, benefits will be paid as indicated in the Table of Losses for each accident.  Claim forms can be secured through the Activities Director from the VHSL  Claims for benefits must be filed within 90 days from date of loss, or as soon reasonably possible. 

10)   27-11-1  CONTEST LIMITATION- No member school may permit its athletes to compete in more than the total number of regular season interscholastic contests as specified in the VHSL handbook…no athlete may participate on the varsity and sub-varsity levels in any sport on the same day.
